One of the main talking points of 2016 has been virtual reality with items like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive becoming more prevalent, but there are plenty of other technological innovations that all gamers need to be aware of. Smartwatches have yet to become an essential piece of kit in the same way as smartphones. In fact, sales in the wearable tech item declined massively last year, with 2.7million units shipped in Q3 of 2016 compared to 5.6million in Q3 of 2015. Perhaps one of the main reasons that they haven’t taken off is because the small screen can’t compare to that of a smartphone or tablet. 55.7% of the US population played mobile games last year, highlighting how gaming is a primary use of these devices. Normally while playing a game on a smartwatch the user’s finger would obscure their view of the screen.

SkinTrack technology could eradicate this issue. It enables the smartwatch wearer to use their arm like a touch screen instead of swiping on the watch surface. This means that when they play games they will be able to see all the action clearly. The software could be a game changer, and exactly what smartwatches need to regain a foothold in the market.

Samsung are already ruling TV markets with their curved screens, and have now branched out into desktop monitors. The first releases such as the SD590C 27inch curved monitor were novel but received criticism over low picture quality. Samsung claims to have rectified this with the Quantum Dot Curved Monitor due out this year. This new screen that comes in varying sizes up to 34 inches could be a gamer’s dream. Certainly with games like roulette and blackjack the immersive tech will make the user feel as though they are on the casino floor.
