How Do Hoverboards Work?
Most of the magic takes place inside of the casing and out of our view, but we lift the veil and take some of the mystery out of these amazing vehicles. Some of the parts that make up a hoverboard are a steel frame, motherboard, gyroscopes, infrared sensors, pressure pads, electric motors, as well as tilt and speed sensors to name just some of the components.
Each wheel contains a motor within that controls your speed and sensors send the RPM (revolution per minute) speed to the gyroscope and speed control boards. This all happens while you lean your weight backward to slow down and when you lean forward to speed up.
This is accomplished thanks to the gyroscopes and tilt speed sensors. The gyroscope knows where your center of gravity is, while the speed controls send info to the sensors in the wheels in order to send your tilting data to the motherboard. These finely tuned parts all communicate and work together.
You’ll find a pressure pad on each side of your self-balancing scooter where you put your feet. The detect your weight and both work together to figure out your weight distribution. There are also switches under each pressure pad that drive the turning mechanism when one foot presses forward.
The brain of the entire operation is the motherboard. It is the onboard computer, much like the one in your home only many times smaller, that does all of the processing, taking care of all of the feedback from the other components. All of the info on acceleration, slowing down, turning and more goes through the brain and gets routed wherever it is needed. Think of it as the conductor in a symphony or a traffic cop.
As you can see, your hoverboard is a bunch of high-tech and complicated components that work with each other in very simple ways.
So how does self-balancing hoverboard work?
Well, it’s all about your center of gravity. The hoverboard’s gyroscopes and tilt sensors work together to maintain your center of gravity based on your weight distribution. You see, those footpads detect your weight and movement, then send the info to the motherboard. This keeps you balanced whether you are speeding up or slowing down.
If we break that down, the more you lean forward, the faster the motherboard tells the motors to spin, to keep you standing upright, so you don’t go tumbling. This is how hoverboards make it easy to balance.
As for power, hoverboards use a battery instead of gas. There are charging ports built into the hoverboard that you plug into when you need more juice. This is just like how you power your laptop and the rest of your gadgets.
Now that we’ve demystified the hoverboard’s inner workings, I think you can appreciate how amazing it is. Many complex parts come together and work in unison to give you a smooth ride every time you use it. The vehicles use simple principles with cutting-edge technology.
Knowing how your hoverboard works might even help you to fix it should something go wrong, or at the very least tell your hoverboard repair guy what the problem is.
